UKIFDA: Five ways to help get through this winter

UKIFDA have compiled a checklist of five ways people who use heating oil can get ready for the colder weather this winter and buy efficiently.

These recommendations are designed to be helpful reminders and useful advice as we head into the winter period.

One: Get ready for winter with simple maintenance and efficiency checks

Over time, boilers become less efficient and tanks can become damaged. By checking both regularly, you can be confident that the heating oil you buy is not wasted.

Two: Order in plenty of time

Check the level of oil in your tank. While the UK has seen three heatwaves this summer, don't leave it too late to check and risk running out. Emergency deliveries are not always immediately possible at busy times.

Three: If you're over 75, sign up for the free Cold Weather Priority scheme

At Highland Fuels, we know our customers and work hard to get deliveries to the most vulnerable quickly. If you're not a regular customer of ours, you may want to consider signing up for the Cold Weather Priority scheme set up by UKIFDA. The CWP scheme helps UKIFDA to identify customers who may be at risk so they can notify local fuel suppliers.

Four: If you are struggling, check the government's advice

For those heating oil users that may be vulnerable or are struggling to pay for their oil, there are a number of guides which are packed with useful information and guidance on how to access support.

There are also a lot of local community groups and projects who can support with small energy grants, so keep an eye on local media and communications in your area.

Five: Contact your regular (and local) fuel distributor

Speak to your local heating oil distributor to check the oil price and find out about payment and service options. At Highland Fuels, we offer a monthly interest free payment plan so you can spread the cost of your heating oil across the year.
